Thermal compression of atomic hydrogen on helium surface

چکیده
We describe experiments with spin-polarized atomic hydrogen gas adsorbed on liquid 4He surface. The surface gas density is increased locally by thermal compression up to 5.5×1012 cm−2 at 110 mK. This corresponds to the onset of quantum degeneracy with the thermal de-Broglie wavelength being 1.5 times larger than the mean interatomic spacing. The atoms were detected directly with a 129 GHz electron-spin resonance spectrometer probing both the surface and the bulk gas. This, and the simultaneous measurement of the recombination power, allowed us to make accurate studies of the adsorption isotherm and the heat removal from the adsorbed hydrogen gas. From the data, we estimate the thermal contact between 2D hydrogen gas and phonons of the helium film. We analyze the limitations of the thermal compression method and the possibility to reach the superfluid transition in 2D hydrogen gas.

متن کاملAtmospheres and Spectra of Strongly Magnetized Neutron Stars
We construct atmosphere models for strongly magnetized neutron stars with surface fields B ∼ 10 − 10 G and effective temperatures Teff ∼ 10 6 − 10 K. The atmospheres directly determine the characteristics of thermal emission from isolated neutron stars, including radio pulsars, soft gamma-ray repeaters, and anomalous Xray pulsars. In our models, the atmosphere is composed of pure hydrogen or he...
متن کاملModeling of the role of atomic hydrogen in heat transfer during hot filament assisted deposition of diamond
The temperature and atomic hydrogen concentration profiles in a hot filament type diamond deposition reactor were determined experimentally and theoretically to demonstrate that the reaction of atomic hydrogen on the substrate surface plays an important role in the heating of the substrate. For a given filament temperature, the substrate temperature in helium was significantly lower than that i...

New X-ray observatories (Chandra and XMM-Newton) are providing a wealth of high-resolution X-ray spectra in which hydrogenand helium-like ions are usually strong features. We present results from a new collisional-radiative plasma code, the Astrophysical Plasma Emission Code (apec), which uses atomic data in the companion Astrophysical Plasma Emission Database (aped) to calculate spectral model...

The spin-polarized calculations in generalized gradient approximation density–functional theory (GGA–DFT) have been used to show how the existence of second metals can modify the atomic hydrogen adsorption on Au (100), Cu (100), and Pt (100) surfaces. The computed adsorption energies for the atomic hydrogen adsorbed at the surface coverage of 0.125 ML (monolayer) for the monometallic Au (100), ...
